Board Nourishment

Care & Maintenance

With proper care & maintenance your wooden kitchenware should last many years if not generations. All our wooden kitchenware products are pre-seasoned and finished in USDA approved food safe mineral oil and beeswax. Caring for your wooden kitchenware is essential for longevity, here are some general guidelines for board Nourishment.

Pre-care

Our boards arrive pre-seasoned and generally should not need any initial care. If however, you feel your board arrives somewhat dry then follow our seasoning instructions below.

Seasoning

Apply a liberal coat of board cream, available here, to your board to help seal wood pores and keep out particles and bacteria as well as help prevent warping, checking and cracking. When applying a coat of the cream to the board massage the cream in with paper or cloth towel evenly and let it sit overnight. If, the following day, you still feel the board is dry repeat the process. It may take 2-3 coats depending on use and the last time you conditioned your board. We recommend seasoning your board 1-3 times a month, again depending on use.

Household cooking oils are not a good alternative to board creams as they can promote mold, become sticky, attract dirt and dust so best stay clear of those alternatives.

Cleaning

Simply wash your woodenware with warm soapy water, rinse and dry it immediately with a hand towel or paper towel. Never put timber boards in a dishwasher or immerse in water. Wooden boards are porous and they will absorb water causing splitting/checking when they dry.

Do not place in dishwasher

Dishwasher heat and water will damage your board with splitting, warping, checking and cracking beyond repair.

Do not soak/submerge

Soaking boards will damage your board with splitting, warping, checking and cracking beyond repair.

Do not place hot items on surface

Do not place hot pots on boards, this may cause warping and leave burnt heat marks on the surface.

Hand-wash only

We recommend hand-washing your board with warm soapy water only, see our Cleaning instructions above.

General Keeping
  • Keep boards in a constant temperature environment
  • Keep knives sharp, blunt knives may score your board.
  • Serrated knives, such as a bread and tomato knives, will score the surface of the board.
  • Meat tenderizers will mar and dent your board requiring resurfacing.
  • The use of a cleaver will most likely damage your board.
  • If you notice your board is warping try standing your board on edge overnight
